Thanks to the ones who have fallen for our freedom we got this Monday off. Monday was gloomy when the clouds rolled in. Ten minutues into the ride it started to rain. Being that it was 65 degrees it felt kind of nice. In the back of my mind I secretly wanted to ride all day. I didn't. What I did come up with is one leg of a 150 + mile mostly off road ride. 4.10hrs later I was home, with a good idea.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sh05JgOPBeI/AAAAAAAAAOU/XlZ53pSTS-Q/s320/1leg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340487568562521570" />

Weekend of riding

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 197px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ShX512nPanI/AAAAAAAAAOE/e5vRiY2KSZo/s320/GW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338447636906076786" />
Like two stale pieces of bread, my legs pushed the pedals as I thought about heading back from what would be a nice ride. I kicked up the cadence and just chilled. I haven't done this route in a while. Up to Villa Park, west on the Great Western Trail and head back on the Praire Path. My ride took less time than I planned, which was ok with me. 2:30. I guess not having snow to ride through makes a difference.

Oh yeah Monsters of the Midway was yesturday. I rode up on Cermak, hit the lake off of MLK Dr. saw a dude stuck under a truck. Watched some racing. Rode tempo back into the wind. I meant to take pictures but that never happened. I was tired on Monday.

Recovery Week

This week is a recovery week. I was thinking about what is a recovery week. Most importantly why do I feel so stale the first couple rides when I get back. Hmm maybe I should have shaken it up at least once or twice during the week. Nothing crazy but something to get the blood pumping and the muscles contracting. In store this week is a SCW Ride, high cadence spinning, the introduction to plyometrics and a some tempo but nothing taken too seriously.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 162px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sgo0Yu6XIOI/AAAAAAAAAN8/GunpTGOInxw/s320/matts+course.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335134308088094946" />

So today was the SCW Ride. The Tuesday night practice crit at the Ace Hardware. This was it. Just what I needed. The pace was high enough where I could sit in at the front and get a good work out in. I did take a couple pulls and found myself in the back 1/4 of the field and had to work back up. No attacking just riding. In the back of my head was "just cool it, sit in, get a work out in and save it for next week." Each lap averaged about 26 mph with a pretty stiff head wind on the open two sides of the one kilometer four corner track.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 235px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sgo0OWe8a2I/AAAAAAAAAN0/vGFVh_i0oeo/s320/Laps.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335134129731955554" />

Earlier today I started to do some more leg work outs which I plan on doing twice a week. Mostly jumping around and trying to recruit some fast twitch muscle fibers. Right now I feel good. I am looking forward to yoga tomorrow and a chill high cadence off road ride on Thursday.

Out for a Spin

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SgV2u8z2E5I/AAAAAAAAANk/dQqGgyZlZqc/s320/IMG_0087.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333799882659861394" />

I look forward to Fridays for more than just the obvious reason. Besides the fact that it is the start of the weekend, Friday is the day that have I set aside for my recovery ride. Something about just spinning around, not worrying about zones or how fast I need to go, really compliments the atmosphere of a Friday evening.

These recovery rides are good for a few reasons.

1. The route I take is different than my training routes which is stimulating.
2. Low speed high cadence is almost like a massage to the legs.
3. It is refreshing just to be on a bike and ride.

I like Friday recovery rides because I get a break from the hard work out on my Thursday race days and enjoy the rest before my weekend hammer fests.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SgV25fIb94I/AAAAAAAAANs/VgwvdjKMJ40/s320/recover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333800063671728002" />

New Day For Testing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SgDzZV5YxoI/AAAAAAAAANc/oWb1P3SxAJY/s320/Snake.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332529575506790018" />

Originally I posted that I was going to test once a month. Sure that is what I am doing. It is just that I am not doing it on the weekend of my recovery week. I guess it didn't make sense to me. So now I do it on the 3rd week of the training ?cycle? What-ever. Kinda actually sounds like I take it serious or something. So back to the course. 1/2mph faster this month so I guess the training is off to a good start. This is the new Saturday ride.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sf4MjmrhWoI/AAAAAAAAANU/caGnOmYO2ZY/s320/Naper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331712814671288962" />

1.15 hrs till I meet the ride from my place.

Throttle it.

Come back hungry.

Today I just cruised. Sure enough, it is still snowing out there. Today I had a plan. The plan was similar to yesterday. Get out before it gets bad and if it gets bad while you are out there, well, you knew it could happen.

Yesterday it was going to rain, late morning to early afternoon. It was going to rain and be in the lower 40's. Being cold I can deal with, being wet can be very tranquil but when they are combined it is misery. Even through there was a ride that went out early in the morning I had other obligations and wouldn't be able to go out till 1.5 hrs after they departed. So I followed my plan to get out, ride tempo, hurry up the hills, and get in before the rain. Mission accomplished. 3 hours of riding on/off road fixed gear 42-16 and a drop off rain fell on my jersey. It was incerdibly windy though! I went to the store to buy some veggies and rain drops hit the windshield.

This morning. The plan was to get out and ride in the snow. Yeah it is snowing again. Ride easy and enjoy the snow but be back before it turns to rain. Hmmmm. I woke up and started riding well before sunrise. The flakes were big and wet and there were many! The ride itself was smooth. Gliding over freshly fallen snow is peaceful; not being able to see out of my glasses because they are caked with slush, frustrating! I slide my glasses down to the tip of my nose, squinted slightly and rode. It wasn't but 30 seconds later that I took a snow flake to the eye and was seeing double as a tear fell down my cheek and I rode off in to the grass. The road soon turned to slush. I left my neoprene socks at home. My chain started to feel rough. Excuses as to why I should go home flood my brain. But I don't just yet because I knew this was a possibility and I do like to suffer on the bike. It feels good on some level. I do however start to notice a rough feeling in my drive train again. Is the bottom bracket worn, is my rear cog misaligned, is my chain worn? What if my pedals fall off when I am way out here in the snow/slush and I get stranded? Let me just take it on in. Mission failed. I rode about 90min and returned with my tail between my legs but I thought to myself at least I am returning with a bike completely intact.

Spring Has Sprung

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScWjuOyqRII/AAAAAAAAAKY/O04Zk5S7SNo/s320/indy+031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315834949820630146" />

In the beginning of winter, well when cyclocross season ended, I started to run. I rode once a week but ran for the most part. After a couple months of running I really got the itch to get back on the bike. There was definitely a transition period where my legs needed to get reacquainted to the pedals. For the last few weeks I have been getting in some base miles with the bike. Which all led up to today. The first test of the season.

The test site is the canal path off Willow Spring Rd. heading west for 10k and back.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScWmxLYE9FI/AAAAAAAAAKw/CGwHWGR5PWw/s320/tt+test.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315838298978317394" />

The plan.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 106px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScWkkk9FVqI/AAAAAAAAAKo/BeZQvDjSDJI/s320/indy+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315835883482863266" />

Ride how I feel. The feeling I was looking for was something hard, comfortable but hard. I was looking for something that would make me work for it but be able to keep a steady pace and just roll.

The results.

Well...I inadvertinatly hit the stop button instead of lap. What was I thinking? I did it on both Garmins! Luckily enough Gary was riding along and he gave me his data which I can work with.

Maybe next moth I will do better...

Into the City

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScLX7iWzLqI/AAAAAAAAAKI/0ouTGpppZYw/s320/chi+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315047928085294754" />

Getting into the city.

Plan A.

1. Sure you may have to wake up way before the sun comes up and shuffle off to ride at day break but when you're flying down those secluded roads it is almost impossible to tear that smile off your face. So I made a quick list.

1. Farm dogs make unexpected sprints points.

2. Low traffic.

3. The traffic there is, waves.

4. No stopping!

5. Clothes dry on a line.

6. Barns have big old American flags painted on 'em.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScGvdR3zM2I/AAAAAAAAAJo/GcnsltvBeJo/s320/kan+034.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314721952822408034" />

Funny thing, growing up I hardly did what I was told. Today was no different. "Road Closed" -eh not for me.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScGnudd4DvI/AAAAAAAAAI4/KAwAQSmDFpQ/s320/kan+010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314713451899653874" />

As I headed down the road, which I was not supposed to be on, I came across a flooded river that spilled across the road. After traveling all the way out here, when I found a map online which I downloaded to my gps that led me to ride a course that I have never seen before, I was not about to turn around and go back. So...I took off my shoes, socks, knee warmers; I shouldered my bike and held my shoes in my hands and headed into what would be water colder than than crossing it was worth. If that last sentence made little sense, what I meant to say was... As a waded through the flooded river I came to the realization that it was extremely cold! (I guess there was snow on the groud a few weeks ago) I did a cost benefit analysis (in the middle of the over flow) I came to the conclusion that the water was so cold that it was not worth going all the way through to only have to do it again at the next flooded section soon after. So, I turned around and headed back. Like a big old chicken.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScGn6rnKnpI/AAAAAAAAAJA/t4jtx-BBh-Y/s320/kan+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314713661855145618" />

I did find a detour and was back on track soon enough. Soon enough to see this cute little black and brown weiner dog chasing me with its stubby little legs and the high pitch bark. Suddenly I heard some more barks, this time deeper. I saw three dogs. They were black and brown, true. Although they were not cute or had small stubby legs. No they were rottweilers and they were chasing, fast! They wanted blood. My chuckle turn into ah...not a chuckle and I turned on the steam.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScGu4rQpUUI/AAAAAAAAAJg/QKI2ZaQS0gU/s320/kan+011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314721323982344514" />

Country riding is for me.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 194px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/ScGpfXXjFDI/AAAAAAAAAJY/N3PU2XD8pLM/s320/Kanrd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314715391587718194" />

Riding into the Countryside with Val's New Energy Bar

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sb2hnQ_KdfI/AAAAAAAAAII/nhHOKfIc1Gg/s320/yorky+042.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313580831313917426" />

It has been a while since I have made my way into the country. Today I headed out with Val's macadamia nut cereal, honey and peanut butter energy bar. The 85 mile ride out to Yorkville and back was as smooth as silk and the new energy bar was a hit!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sb2f74tGZhI/AAAAAAAAAHw/2tB-Jbaqs04/s320/val+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313578986549700114" />

This route needs some massaging but for the most part it kept me guessing what was around each corner and at each turn there was a welcoming surprise. I have done an out-and-back of part of this course before but since I am for the most part, anti out-and-back, I relied on my Garmin for an impromptu course re-routing.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sb2gQctfO1I/AAAAAAAAAH4/QOc742ixElw/s320/yorky+037.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313579339812387666" />

Val's bar was probably sweeter than the ride but I am up for a re-match! The "Cross Avenger," is similar to a road ride because of its length but more importantly the ability to let it all hang out. This course is mainly on 2 different path systems where no cars are allowed and there is not a stop sign in sight. This is really a luxury since downtown Chicago is only a stones throw to the east. For Illinois, 1440 feet of climbing on a 50 mile ride is also gratifying. You also can fit in the refinery loop in Christain Vande Velde country with out laying rubber on Lemont Rd. Make sure to straddle the cross bike since 1/4 of the ride is off road which makes you work for your money.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 158px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/Sbwm-LGDxhI/AAAAAAAAAHg/iKwofw8Ab8Y/s320/Alt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313164509962290706" />

Sputtering Out

I drew many similarities between my road ride yesterday and the final kilometers of Stage 3 of Paris Nice.

1. They both were wet. Sure that was lame.
2. My late winter form reminded me of Langeveld off the front with the chase group (summer form) closing in when ever they want. (My summer form, ten fold doesn't come close to any kind of form these guyys have, don't get me wrong.)
3. My sprint resembled Flecha's, sputtering out and like an old Ford Pinto low on fuel. I told my self, as I coasted through the sprint point, that I was sprinting into wind and I went out too soon. Although as I headed back east I was now in the wind. There was no excuss other than I need to work on sprinting.

As for my first road ride of the season I went out disconnected from technology. My wrist had only company of a Casio calculator watch. I have been on many rides this year but none on a road bike. Fixed gear-yeah, Mountain bike-yeah, Cyclocross bike-yeah, Road bike-nope.
I forgot how smooth the Merlin Works bike is. It really rides like silk.
Now that it is warmer and the sun sets at 7 I will be on the Merlin working on that sprint, well among everything else.

Windy Riding.

This weekend the temperature refused to go above freezing and the wind blew like mad. What we do have is wind and snow. When the two mix it isn't much fun but with out it, it wouldn't be the same.

I do like the freshly fallen powder snow, especially when I sail through it on my single speed set up. This weekend I had plans to go mountain biking on trails in Palos but when I woke up to see a nice blanket of snow on the ground below, I scratched that idea because I do not know those trails well enough. What I do know is the Centennial Trail to the Waterfall Glen snow ride loop that Gary and I found last year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SaBnZJvhbyI/AAAAAAAAAGA/HYKr5UMWnrw/s320/snow+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305354042852077346" />

The C trail is paved. This makes for smooth sailing. Although cadence in the snow on a single speed bike is about 60-70rpm with a 38x18. After crossing Lemont Rd. you start a short climb into Waterfall Glen, the back way. This leads you up to the air plane hill which has a switchback descent. The trail ends with a steep climb up the hidden hill and ends on little Bluff Rd.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SaBnmHJKbkI/AAAAAAAAAGI/08QZVbTFv0s/s320/snow+006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305354265492614722" />

From my house the route is only 30 miles but well worth the solid tempo pace, having to work for it the entire time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SaBm_95DBHI/AAAAAAAAAFw/fGufqZa1UOA/s320/SnowDayz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305353610174071922" />

Connecting Paths Early in the Year

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmSrlVktuI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/SywASvY_UA0/s320/PP+Feb+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303431313660098274" />

I was looking forward to connecting different path systems this weekend for a long and enjoyable ride. In the past I have been on most of the trails but really never rode them in a continuous loop. This proved to be an adventure worth embarking.

The ride.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmS_nX-N1I/AAAAAAAAAFY/fdsBipcwPS0/s320/PP+Feb+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303431657804412754" />

This route is comprised of crushed limestone and paved paths. The crushed limestone parts are secluded and make you work for your speed. The paved sections have nice scenery but have potential to be crowded on days with nice weather. There is a residential area that you will ride through but the streets are wide enough to ride two abreast comfortably.

When I left the house my mind was flooded with the ride from the day prior. It was a little windy which made it feel colder than what it really was but when the wind was at our backs it was rather pleasant. For whatever reason I thought today would be the same, well it wasn’t. An hour into the ride my bottles froze and my clif bar was iced-solid. I rode many times in the cold but I haven’t had my drinks freeze in about 2 years. I guess because I wear a camelbak when the temperatures dip below freezing. This totally slipped my mind completly. So I drank some slush as a found my way through the snow covered trail.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmSNXYxI4I/AAAAAAAAAFA/igAzqUlfXhs/s320/PP+Feb+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303430794519323522" />

I soon met up with the Prairie Path and headed over to the Fox River Trail cruising down the river. I liked the trail. Some of the turns were tight and I know of the potential for it to get crowded in the summer. I followed the trail and when I got to the fork in the road I took the Batavia Spur.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmSV2C-f7I/AAAAAAAAAFI/ztct6Y7m4Cg/s320/PP+Feb+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303430940188377010" />

I haven’t been on this part of the trail before and it actually made my day. At this time I still failed to stop at a store to get some fluids in my system and at 3 hours plus, I was way over due. There are many spots to stop along the Fox. The Batavia spur cut through residential areas and bordered Fermi Lab all on crushed limestone. Soon I found myself paralleling the East-West Toll way 88. I never knew this existed. This trail exited on Diehl Rd. which gave me the option to go up Wheaton or south to North Aurora. Neither of them was where I wanted to go so I took residential streets through Naperville, Lisle, and Downers Grove to get home.

I have plans on doing this route again. Today it took 4.45hr for 72, mainly off road, miles. Most likely I will do it when my bottles do not freeze.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmW-oNtfGI/AAAAAAAAAFo/fPFQ6IMENWE/s320/pp1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303436038896450658" />

Flatlandia to Hold Circuit Race

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 137px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZmJfVZRzxI/AAAAAAAAAE4/5GBmh6YQEnQ/s320/leleand.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303421207617589010" />
As the search party dreamt of a race to sanction and what wonders they would find, snow fell on what would be the route determined. Jason. Ted and I met up in Rural Illinois, 75 miles west of the city, in a small town called Leland. Oddly enough, it is right down the street from where I grew up.

We met up in their downtown across the street from Casey’s.

It didn’t take too long to find a suitable course for us to race on. In all actuality it is very flatlandia because of its flat farm roads with very natural turns and a stretch of gravel with a small riser.

We got out to pre-ride the course. I brought along the GT GTR cross bike with a 42 tooth chaining caressed by double chain guards and a 12-27 in the back and file tread tires. Jason had his surly cross check running a single speed 42x16 with full on fenders. Ted was straddled his full carbon BH Connect team bike.

The roads were covered in an inch or so dusting of snow. This proved to be adventuress for our man Ted as he slid through the corners like a dirt bike racer on an oval track.

Le Course

A roll out from Leland High starts this 10 mile circuit race that heads west on 47th street. Flying down farm roads you parallel a freight train and blast past a pig farm and some horses. The turns are easy and fast. The course runs clockwise to avoid cross traffic turns. The best part of the course is the gravel road that has a small riser in the middle and is located on the last stretch before you turn onto the slightly uphill finishing straight.

When the Snow Melts

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 138px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZA1saIHqII/AAAAAAAAAEo/t7zfXglpdzA/s320/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300795798458968194" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZA1TvSQ-SI/AAAAAAAAAEg/jgw4Q7kPTy0/s320/snow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300795374641936674" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZA1TSV663I/AAAAAAAAAEY/JaqJ76EgkCU/s320/deer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300795366872640370" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SZA1TAp1S3I/AAAAAAAAAEQ/MZACJvyUG6Q/s320/bars.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300795362124319602" />

All last week I was looking forward to the weekend. I thought this weekend would give me the opportunity to go into Lemont through the back roads and get in 50 + miles almost car-less. I got out Saturday to recon the Sunday route. Although it was a blast, the snow never melted fully. This left snow/slush in the tree covered areas of the paved route. By the time I got off-road it felt like my rear tire was flat from it sinking into the earth. When I got to the crushed limestone section, which had full tree cover, it was more than a pain to grind up hill in the snow/slush mixture. For what ever reason I left my neoprene socks at home. At 58 degrees I didn't really mind that my feet felt like the were in a margarita but I knew that the following day would be 20 degrees colder and this would be unpleasant.

Sunday. The route was road bound. I still brought the Surly. It was built up with a fixed 38x18 gear, WTB Mutanoraptor 700x45 tires, Truvativ riser bars, and avid 7's mountain bike brakes. Not a bike for the road or a pleasant ride when I am in the company of road bikes. I have the feeling my cadence was well over 120 for the 55 miles we were out. I have to say it was the best workout I got in this year though!

Both days were fun and a pleasant break from the below freezing weather we have had for some time now.

Next week should be awesome!

Better than Sunday Morning Cartoons

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SYW8LF7Kn2I/AAAAAAAAADw/MQJhjtzaOsc/s320/15.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5297847435426176866" />
Waking up early to watch a live feed,over the internet, of the World Championships of Cyclocross was a treat this morning. Finally it got me. I wasn't in denial in fact I shrugged it off and got to work. Ya' know it wasn't half bad. This may be because I spent only half of my 2 hour work out on it. The first half is as follows...

150 Fludder kicks
200 Crunches
50 Sit ups
100 Push ups
3 sets of dips 15,15,15
3 sets of pull ups 12,12,12
3 sets of calf raises with dumbbells. 10,15,20
3 sets of lunges with dumbbells 10,15,20
3 sets of high jumps 10,15,20
3 sets of squats with a bar 10,15,20
3 sets of side lunges 10, 15, 20
3 sets of table push ups 10, 15, 20.

After the first hour I straddled that trainer for a pyramid work out of tempo, sub threshold and threshold work.

All in all it wasn't that bad but I am looking forward to an off road ride this weekend. This lets it heat up a little or give me some sun time. Sunday was an early ride. An early finger numbing ride. A ride with snow covered roads, fixed gears, slush filled pot holes, salt, a stiff head wind and a couple good friends.

It is time to slap on the fenders. I was the only one with out any slush guards and probably with the cleanest face.

At 3.5 I can honestly say that I was tired, especially since I haven't pushed the pedals in a couple weeks now and I passed on the chocolaty goodness at Ted's casa.

The E-Helmet

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SWyqypchrYI/AAAAAAAAADI/xQGbCfJpyQw/s320/Picture+2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290791449349172610" />
Sure I could run or bike with out any cool technologically advanced gadgets but hey I like ‘em. Although using the power tap on my bike was a little out of my league and with all the hassles that came with it was not for me… What is cool to take along is a GPS.

There are a few websites that appeal to the GPS user such as www.gpsies.com www.mapmyride.com and www.motionbased.com

Motion Based is a website that supplements Garmin’s training GPSs.

Last Sunday was my first “long run” of the HM training plan. Even though the run was only 6 miles it will gradually increase.

The Plan
Week Tuesday Wednesday Sat/Sun
1 4x400 3-mile tempo 6-mile long run
2 4x800 4-mile tempo 8-mile long run
3 3x1600 5-mile tempo 10-mile long run
4 6x400 6-mile tempo 6-mile long run
5 3x1600 4-mile tempo 10-mile long run
6 4x800 8-mile tempo 8-mile long run
7 6x400 6-mile tempo 10-mile long run
8 4x1600 8-mile tempo 12-mile long run
9 3x800 3-mile tempo 6-mile long run
10 4x400 2-mile tempo Half Marathon

This 6 miler was done at my HMP + 30 seconds per mile which ended up being an 8:20 mile pace, nothing crazy.

By uploading the data from my watch, anyone is able to take a look at the course. People looking for a map of runs in any area can look at a map and even press “play” to see how the course was run! Way too cool. Check it out here.

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/player/7438197

Technology is cool but I hope I don’t get too carried away like this guy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 302px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SWyq7SkNreI/AAAAAAAAADQ/cxX_tP9AMFM/s320/frame13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290791597826223586" />

Testing for the Berwyn Fire Department

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SWycljO69CI/AAAAAAAAADA/Y6Sdj9TunmE/s320/DSC02291.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290775831180407842" />
About a month or so ago I read that the Berwyn Fire Department was accepting applications ($50). Unfortunatly, at the first meeting for us candidates (200) we were informed that there no actual openings in the department. We did, however, take a physical test and upon completion, take a written test. Following this, there will be an oral interview and then the results will be posted. These results are good for the next two years. In this time, they explained, they may hire 2-4 candidates. On the up side, the physical test was pretty cool.
The test consisted of 6 different stages which were... 35 foot ladder extension, 75 foot ladder climb, 200lb dummy drag, 3 stair flights sprint up and down with SCBA gear, 150 foot hose crawl in black out SCBA and 100 lb weight carry in SCBA. All the tests were to be completed under a tight time constraint and was actually worth the money I paid for the application!
Although the tests were all anaerobic they were not too intensly challenging. If you did fail one stage you were disquallified. Too bad there wasn't a ladder race!

Rangers Lead the Way

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SWfhzPdciBI/AAAAAAAAACo/YYzRABn4yrE/s320/training+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289444557809551378" />
Rangers Lead the Way, not only in the US Army but through my winter training for core strength. Keeping up with this Ranger instructed work out is a challenge and doing the 2-30 min sessions, consecutively, is a bonus.

After building a base for running, my training has started. Coupled to my training plan is a Garmin Forerunner 305. This tool is out of this world! A couple awesome features is its GPS that tells your pace and how far you have traveled. This is outstanding and humbling. I use heart rate on the bike but actually knowing your real time pace, while running, is incredible when you have a plan, a number and, I guess... guts. I may actually get fast now.

Honestly I thought I was faster and doing 8 intervals of just max heart rate for 1.5 min I thought I knew my tempo speed. I stuck to the pace number I set for a 4 mile tempo and realized, fast, that it was not right. Regardless I kept it up and after 4 miles of cruising, my work out was coming to and end while my thighs felt like they got hit with a bat.

With all this good training I need a good stretch! The book "Stretching," from Bob Anderson will lead the way. This book actually has stretching routines form flying a desk to being in the rodeo!

I do like riding and all but running around in neoprene has its perks too...wait, what!? Hey better than riding on the trainer.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SWfoHd23p2I/AAAAAAAAAC4/2OkCrbj6txg/s320/run.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289451502341433186" />

Snow Ride......Take it Easy

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SUSHgZrv0gI/AAAAAAAAACg/6paEUrgGKFQ/s320/Snow+Ride+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279493653905003010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aw2DAW2_NI/SUSHX81aTbI/AAAAAAAAACY/BnEYK-FYq6E/s320/Snow+Ride+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279493508721954226" />
Much of today was spent going over the same old trail. Except this time it was covered with snow. The main goal was to try to find the Des Plaines River Trail buy route of the Salt Creek. This mission was accomplished and to add icing to the cake the Des Plaines Trail, starting at the Des Plaines River and Madison, was single track and there wasn't a straight set of trail insight! This route will for sure have to be modified but was a joy despite the fact that my buddy got a flat 3:45 into the ride and my fingers were numb by the time I got home. Newspaper, popcorn, wine...well maybe not wine, and hmmm...dry feet. Yeah dry feet! Cool tip for winter riding. If you want dry feet and don't have any fancy winter mountain bike shoes, wrap a plastic bag around your dogs before putting your shoes on. I like the newspaper bag because they aren't too bulky. After a few hours of riding today only one of my little piggies broke through and the only moisture in my wool socks was man made. This 12 week course taught the citizens of Hinsdale, and me from Clarendon Hills, everything from D.A.R.E. to S.W.A.T. In those 50+hours we got an in-depth view of how the police go about getting their courageous job done. Some of the highlights of the course were, investigating a crime scene, interviewing suspects, learning and applying the proper procedure to make a traffic stop, going on a ride along with Hinsdale's finest and then shooting it up at their indoor range. This was a terrific experience to met the proud and passionate men and women who serve on an accredited and accomplished Police Department.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ryanwithwheels.blogspot.com/2008/12/open-up-this-is-police.html' title='Open Up! The first snow fall! There is really electricity in the air this time of year. The combination of freshly fallen snow, Christmas decorations, people shoveling their drive and kids at the sledding hill make evening runs so enjoyable. Maybe it is because it feels like I am playing and also thankful that I already finished my driveway. It is also peaceful to run in the dark. I have a light on my shoe and one on my glove so I guess I feel one with the decorations. Well that may have gone too far. All I know is that I am actually doomed from here on out because it will be like chasing your first high, well I guess till the next time it snows...Hopefully then I do not have Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer stuck on repeat in my head.

Out with the old and in with the new...well at least for a little while.

Even though the off season is starting a couple weeks earlier for me this year, I am still looking forward to it. This year I will try things a little differently. For the next few months my training will revolve around running, yoga, weights and the weekend adventure ride(s). No need to be shy about it but I don't mind being told what to do...so I will follow a structured training regiment for a half marathon. This plan is three fold. 1. The plan is laid out for me to follow in a way that I enjoy. 2. The duration is long enough to safely train for a half marathon, keeping me outside, that by the duration's end, it will be about pre-season, or base. 3. The half marathon is not so physically strenuous that I will be unable to do core work outs and yoga, as well as my adventure rides on the weekend.
Last year I rode all but one week in the winter and even though that was (ahem) cool, I do not see my self repeating the same.

Watch me do really bad next year..oh well

"Sans tourner autour du pot," welcome to the off season. In the future I will ride there and meet her, or ride with some friends to grab some chow. So drop me a line when your stomach growls.

But for the real reason I am sitting here typing is to share how nice it is to just ride in the "off season." No worries about time in zones or numbers of power and on and on. Just you and the bike. Well at least for me. This time of year is great for exploring new routes and never saying nay to a detour.

Today I finally connected some trails that I had wanted to for a while. The Salt Creek Trail to the Prarie Path to the Great Western Trail back to the Prarie Path for a 3.5 hr fixed gear ride with out the "out and back ride" that I am always trying to avoid. I am putting on the GPS on the old bike tomorrow to share every new route.

In The Land Where Fatties Fit Fine

Since I strained my back and neglected to train I have bowed out of the last CYCLOCROSS RACES of the Season. The bike is perfect for off road adventures.

This bike is set up as a fixed gear 38x18. The crankset is from Sugino. I had a dura-ace 7801 crank but with the external bb I ended up wearing out (bb) more than I changed my undies. So I left out the bling and went with durable. The handlebars are WTB road/mountain bars. Awesome, incredible leverage, and when you run a ss you need what ever power you can get going up hills. The brake levers are from Shimano and the saddle is a Fizik Gobi and posted up with a Thomson Seatpost that matches the thomson Stem.

Excuse the long introduction and unfortunatly there is no real story to report except the Cenntenial Trail is closed westbound from Lemont till March 2009! Hmm... that only mean I will have to find a detour.

Mmmmm Food....

Giving Thanks is an Understatement!
